Japanese woodblock prints, or ukiyo-e and shin-hanga, are made by carving images into wood, inking them and pressing paper by hand.
Shin-hanga
In the early twentieth century the shin-hanga movement revived the tradition with modern light and atmosphere. Artists such as Hasui Kawase became known for rain, snow and twilight scenes.
